THE CUCKOO.—The welcome sound of the cuckoo's two notes was heard in Llanyblodwe parish on Thursday, April 18th, by numbers of men, women, and children. I do not mention with certainty the assertion of the person who heard it niue days previously, somewhere about Pant, for in most neighbourhoods there is such a person.whose acute sense of hearing penetrates further than most people's. It is enough for my purpose to say that the cuckoo was actually heard on the 18th in these parts.

I spent some time this morning (1895) admiring the rich tangle of an osier-bed on the Itchen. Here was the later willow-herb (Epilobium hirsutum), spangled with carmine ; the meadow-sweet, with creamy corymbs as fragrant as on midsummer day ; white con¬volvulus ; bitter-sweet, bearing purple and yellow flowers mingled with its scarlet berries; white valerian and pink hemp agrimony; yellow marsh Lysimachia and crimson loose¬strife—all these be flowers of stature. Of more lowly growth are the St. John's worts, golden elecampane, and violet skullcap. This last, however, is not the six-inch dwarf one has seen in the shingle beside a Highland loch ; here, heat and moisture have encouraged it to a height of a couple of feet. The glow of colour and the rich setting of reeds and other foliage are what the eye may revel in with content for a long time.
Then the hedge dividing the osiers from the road is draped with graceful briony and wild clematis. Why is this British clematis, with its wan, inconspicuous flowers, called traveller's joy ? It is the poor relation of the brilliant exotic species, and there are showier herbs in which wayfarers might be expected to take more delight....The hollow wood beyond is gay with scarlet fruit spikes of cuckoo-pint

THE FIRST CUCKOO. A correspondent writes that the extremely mild weather is bringing vegetation rapidly into life in Mid-Staffordshire. The hedges are all in bud and buttercups are by no means scarce. On Saturday afternoon [15 Chwefror] the thrush was indulging in joyous song, while the blackbird tuned his melodious notes. Most surprising of all was the voice of the cuckoo, which was heard clear and strong in a field near Armitage Parish Church. The cuckoo rarely visits our shores before April, and his early advent is therefore, uncommonly interesting.

February 15 Mounds thick with leaves but bare of grass. Nettles – dumb and stinging – springing up (the latter not so sharply toothed) Hedgesparrow sings Starling flock in meadows wheel and rise all in close array. Cuckoo pint leaves tender green pushing up, rolled as yet unwrapped.
Ground Ivy everywhere. Dandelion tufts – some orange blossom too Goosegrass thick. Crinkled leaves [wild?] mustard not yet full & spire like, but lying prone- Young yarrow leaves coming up like a dormouse tail – not yet fur-like. Elder leaves budding – bronzed; also flower buds in a microscopic cluster

Boom [tanlinellwyd] of a threshing machine a mile away like the hum of bees aloft. To the cottage on the hill under the beeches by the upland arable where the hare’s leap runs. Beech leaves in furrows at edge of wood. Cuckoo pint leaves spattered with purple.

April 26 The wind still holds exceeding bitter and owing to the night frosts there is but little growth. The beech tree, one of several that stand up on the garden lawn of this house, has however come into leaf. During all the many years that I have known this place, whatever the season, that tree has never failed to be the first to unfold its foliage, something in its constitution making it of an earlier habit than its fellows. The hawthorns also have dressed themselves in tender greens and down by the Bath Hills I noticed an oak almost bursting it`s buds while those of the ash at its side were still asleep in there hard sheaths of winter black. Although it was quite hot here where the east wind never comes, many of the beaches also have made no start at all. The butterflies however know that spring is at hand for already I have seen peacocks, large sulphurs and two specimens of the scarce tortoiseshell. Today also I heard the cuckoo for the first time this year.

August 18 Yesterday we finished mowing the barley on the Aoe field.... This morning there fell a very heavy dew - indeed as I walked down to bathe the Waveney, about half past seven, E
verything was drenched with it and the feel of the air was quite autumnal.... On the lawn has recently appeared a young cuckoo being fed by two water wagtails, with which I have been acquainted for many years. Heavens! how those poor little birds must work to keep their fosterling supplied! There the voracious, angry looking creature sits, now in one place and now in another, his scarlet maw extended wide, and eats, and scolds, and eats from dawn till dusk, and for aught I know to the contrary, from dusk till dawn as well...

Since 1832 the yellow-billed cuckoo has occurred in Wales on 3 occasions, being found dead in 1870 near Aberystwyth, and in 1899 at Craig y Don, Anglesey. The third was seen briefly at Porthclais Clais, Pembrokeshire on 30th October 1994, an occurrence graphically described by Devonald and Price 1994, the two fortunate observers. Bird watchers who had gathered to search for a yellow browed warbler reported nearby sadly missed out.

Many note the time they see a swallow for the first` time in spring or hear the cuckoo on its arrival, and if the dates are early it is unusually interesting.... therefore, say that when I found mushrooms in an old pasture first week in April I had to look twice to make sure they were the right sort.....
